Interview With A Full Sail Student

I questioned a Full Sail Real World University student about the school for all you gamers who might want to be in the industry one day, here are the results:

ReyCarlitos16: Hi
d o m i n i c ds: why hello there
ReyCarlitos16: Mind if I ask you some questions about Full Sails game program?
d o m i n i c ds: go right ahead
ReyCarlitos16: alright i was wondering about the math courses? are they really hard?
d o m i n i c ds: you’re looking into the game design program correct?
ReyCarlitos16: yeah
d o m i n i c ds: the game design program has 3 main math classes: calculas, linear algebra and physics
d o m i n i c ds: and i can’t give you a complete answer because i only took the calc class
d o m i n i c ds: but it was very quick and to the point
ReyCarlitos16: o OK
d o m i n i c ds: they taught the basics in a pretty simple manner
d o m i n i c ds: and that’s it
ReyCarlitos16: so would you suggest like calculus in high school then
ReyCarlitos16: ?
d o m i n i c ds: hm
d o m i n i c ds: probably the same amount of material covered as in HS, but much more quickly
d o m i n i c ds: there are something like 8 lectures total
d o m i n i c ds: about four hours each
ReyCarlitos16: ic
d o m i n i c ds: but in my opinion it wasn’t very hard
d o m i n i c ds: if someone studies a bit, i cant see them having any trouble
d o m i n i c ds: and the teacher was always available for help outside of class
ReyCarlitos16: kool and how is the area where full sails at?
d o m i n i c ds: ehhhh
d o m i n i c ds: its mostly Urban/suburban
d o m i n i c ds: lotta shopping malls and wal marts
ReyCarlitos16: o thats good
d o m i n i c ds: its not far from UCF, so there’s a lot of college students around
ReyCarlitos16: ic
ReyCarlitos16: do you know if any of the big game companies hire designers in the US?
ReyCarlitos16: like Square-Enix, Sega, Nintendo, etc.
d o m i n i c ds: yeah all of those companies have US offices, but full sail’s game design program is a lot more tailored to game programming than design
ReyCarlitos16: ic
ReyCarlitos16: there isn’t anywhere set on game design?
ReyCarlitos16: i mean i know its a mix of most things
ReyCarlitos16: and that there’s different parts to it
ReyCarlitos16: does it just come with experience in the industry?
d o m i n i c ds: hm
d o m i n i c ds: well full sail does teach some about game design, its just a lot more about programming
ReyCarlitos16: oh OK
d o m i n i c ds: a lot of game designers get degrees in writing and English
d o m i n i c ds: one website you might want to check out is http://sloperama.com/advice.html
d o m i n i c ds: its the website of a game producer with a lot of experience in the industry
ReyCarlitos16: ya I’ve been there before
d o m i n i c ds: oh great
d o m i n i c ds: yeah i don’t really know that much about schools that have degrees focused purely on game design
d o m i n i c ds: there may be some out there
ReyCarlitos16: I remember it saying something about game designers being given ideas they dont get to use their own i wasn’t too happy to read that
d o m i n i c ds: yeah that happens a lot… especially for game designers that don’t have a lot of experience
ReyCarlitos16: what do you think of programming?
d o m i n i c ds: i like it
d o m i n i c ds: the first few steps of learning are probably the hardest part
ReyCarlitos16: what kind of programming languages do they teach?
d o m i n i c ds: C and C++ mostly
d o m i n i c ds: which are by far the most used in games
ReyCarlitos16: ic that’s kool
d o m i n i c ds: yeah if you want to learn how to program games, i think full sail is definitely one of the best choices
d o m i n i c ds: although its a fairly intense program, and you cant easily change majors if you change your mind
d o m i n i c ds: mind rather
ReyCarlitos16: o ic
ReyCarlitos16: well thanks alot
d o m i n i c ds: no problem
